Spittoon began as a poetry night in a ball called Mado on Baochao hutong (宝钞胡同), located in Beijing’s Dongcheng（东城） District. Spittoon Poetry was created as a way to provide a stage for Beijing’s diverse population of ex-pats. It became clear very quickly that Spittoon was responding to a need that Beijing’s expat scene had – a creative and literary energy compounded by such a huge diversity of nationalists.
Before long, the poetry night was attended by people from all over the world, enjoying poetry together and even reading in their own languages. Now, Spittoon is expanding so fast, with a very successful fiction night, Spittoon Fiction; a music and poetry collaboration event, Spit-Tunes; a workshop series; and has published two issues of Spittoon Literary Magazine, a wonderful journal of English language literature and Chinese language poetry in translation.
